Skip’s April 22, 2010 Chase Log – Texas Panhandle Tornadofest

Dryline/Upslope play in the TX panhandle. Waited for initiation with several other chasers in Childress, TX. Departed for initiation southeast of Amarillo, intercepting north of Clarendon on highway 70. Noted cycling supercell with two large, cone tornadoes. Followed storm north of Alanreed where it gusted out. Dropped back down to highway 70 to intercept strengthening southern storm. Intercepted wall cloud and followed storm north of Alanreed noting two, brief RFD gust front tornadoes. Fled south trying to beat RFD core while passing relatively close to multi vortex tornado. Called chase over when back on I-40 as storms lined out, making for OK to setup for next day’s setup.

Skip’s Chase Log: June 15, 2009 – Kinsley, KS

Dryline and warm front setup in Kansas. Targeted Hays, KS where dryline initiated storms would move towards better directional shear near warm front. Ran south from Hays towards storms initiating near Dodge City. Intercepted west of Kinsley, KS noting wall cloud. Storm gusted out into massive HP supercell. Noted weak leading edge tornado west of Kinsley before getting cored in Kinsley and dropping south. Followed storm from south noting gustnadoes and massive dust storm. Saw straight line wind damage and drove over downed power lines. Attempted to punch core from south but hit tree debris and cracked windshield from golfball sized hail. Dropped south and called chase off, heading to Pratt to get dinner and stop for the night.

Skip’s Chase Log: June 14, 2009 – Ulysses, KS

Dryline setup in SW KS. Targeted Dodge City, KS with Adam Lucio. Departed from Clarendon, TX and headed west from Liberal, KS towards initiation in SE CO. Intercepted severe warned cell near Johnson City and noted brief lowering. Followed cell westward into CO before intercepting tail end charlie back in KS. Followed storm from north to Ulysses, KS noting RFD clear slot and tornado. Caught in hook afterwards with severe winds. Broke out ahead to outflow dominant HP supercell. Called chase off but intercepted again after storm regained tornado warning. Viewed base from afar noting scud before stopping in Medicine Lodge for night.

Skip’s Chase Log: June 5, 2009 – Harrisburg, NE

Upslope flow setup in Wyoming and Colorado. Targeted Sterling, CO. Left Westchester at 10:00 pm solo arriving in Sterling at 2 pm. Ran north into Nebraska for storms initiating in southeast Wyoming. Intercepted storm just south of Harrisburg, NE at 4:30 pm noting stovepipe tornado. Watched tornado rope out from distance and observed storm approach with cycling wall cloud and funnels. Followed storm until it gusted out at 8 pm east of Dalton, NE. Celebrated with steak dinner in Sidney, NE with Stan Rose and IL gang.

Skip’s Chase Log: May 13, 2009 – Edina, MO

Cold front setup with possible outflow/warm front play further south. Chased with Ben Leitschuh. Initially targeted Litchfield, IL for the southern play, but only unimpressive MCV moved through. Crossed into Missouri and blasted north after developing cold front storms. Intercepted tornado warned cell just west of Baring, MO noting developing wall cloud and rotating rain curtains. Brief rope tornado developed. Raced east to keep ahead of the approaching circulation. Finally dropped south of rain wrapping circulation and called it a chase. Celebrated in Quincy with steak dinner at The Abbey.

Skip’s May 30, 2008 Chase Log – Waverly, IL

After work chase, and departed with mature supercells already underway. Caught severe warned bow echo south of Kankakee and stopped for a picture of a shelf cloud. Missed supercell near Lincoln before it died and continued to Springfield to intercept already tornado warned supercells. Intercepted two supercells on 72 noting wall clouds on both. Followed rear supercell past Springfield until it weakened and double backed west of Springfield to intercept a third supercell. Intercepted just west of Waverly IL noting very large wall cloud. Tornado developed half mile from position and crossed escaped route. Cored by hook with golf ball sized hail and escape route was blocked by downed trees ending chase.

Skip’s March 28, 2007 Chase Log – Goodland, KS

Chased Moderate Risk setup in northwest KS, initially solo but later caravanning with Jerry Funfsinn. Sampled three storms noting striations and a funnel before dropping south to tornado warned supercell. Watched Goodland, KS supercell produce 5 tornadoes and a needle funnel including a rain wrapped tube with a rope tail, a sunset trunk, another tube-rope, a wedge, and a cone alongside the wedge. Called it a chase when boxed in by supercells and squall lines.
